PUCSL refutes the Cabinet decision to raise electricity charges.

Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, states that there is no need to increase the electricity rates again.

He points out that the CEB has been profitable for the past few months and as a result there is no need to charge rates at present.

He mentioned that although he respected the Public Utilities Commission Act, he did not respect the minister.

He said that the Act is a public policy and he still believes that the political authority will not go outside the public policy.

He says that there is only a conflict of opinion between Power and Energy Minister Mr. Kanchana Wijesekera and him.   Further to this he said that even though the cabinet paper says to ignore the power cut, the people must get the benefit of the power cut.

He made these comments at a press conference held at his office.
