The Sri Lanka Electricity Board has requested the Public Utilities Commission to increase the electricity bill once again in order to cover the losses incurred by the Sri Lanka Electricity Board. Sri Lanka Latest News
But the Public Utilities Commission has rejected the request and they say that the existing tariff revision is sufficient.
The General Manager of Ceylon Electricity Board, Mr. G. A. D. R. P Senaviratne has sent a letter to the Director General of the Public Utilities Commission.
In his letter, the General Manager has pointed out that the electricity board’s income this year has decreased by about 33 billion rupees due to the tariffs submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board and approved by the Public Utilities Commission.
It also states that the outstanding amount to be paid for the generation of renewable electricity is about 29.7 billion rupees.
Accordingly, the article has indicated that when the electricity tariff increase was proposed for the year, 4,500 gigawatts of hydropower was expected to be obtained, but due to the dry weather conditions in the country, only 1,738 gigawatts of hydropower could be produced.
Through the letter sent on the 21st of last month, the Managing Director of the Electricity Board requests that the increase in the production of electricity through heat generation, the increase in demand for electricity and meeting the expenses of the board is a serious problem.
Accordingly, this letter has informed that for the year 2023, the Ceylon Electricity Board should revise its electricity bill to increase its income by 33 billion rupees.
Meanwhile, in an inquiry made by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka regarding the revision of electricity tariffs, the Commission says that it has also sent a reply letter to the Electricity Board stating that the current revision of electricity tariffs is sufficient.
