This marks the first time a Sinhala-language film, restored under the FISCH program—a collaborative initiative involving the Cinema Heritage Foundation, the French Embassy in Sri Lanka, the French Institute in India, and the French Embassy in the Maldives—will be showcased at Cannes.

The film’s restoration represents a major international effort to preserve Sri Lankan cinematic heritage. It also highlights the timeless value of Gahanu Lamai as a powerful expression of women’s storytelling in cinema.

Speaking on this historic occasion, French Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Rémy Lambert, stated:

“In restoring Sumitra Peries’ directorial debut Gahanu Lamai, our aim was not only to preserve a cornerstone of Sri Lankan film history but also to bring back to light an extraordinary work of feminine cinematic expression. We deeply appreciate the dedication and expertise of the Film Heritage Foundation, which took on the challenge of restoration. Thanks to them, Gahanu Lamai has been beautifully restored. It is our pride to stand with Sri Lanka in preserving its rich and meaningful film heritage.”
