Wilpattu National Park, renowned as the largest sanctuary in Sri Lanka, stands as a celebrated haven for tigers worldwide. Recent observations reveal the presence of eight tigers nurturing their cubs within its boundaries.
“Based on our research conducted in 2018, Wilpattu presently boasts the highest tiger density among Asian forests. Currently, eight female tigers have been sighted with their newborn cubs. Notably, this marks the fifth occasion that a female tiger in the Maradanmaduwa area has given birth. My involvement in tiger research within Wilpattu dates back to 2011, yet this occurrence is unprecedented,” shared wildlife researcher Kitsiri Gunawardena with the BBC Sinhala Service.
The tiger population within Wilpattu is estimated at 313 individuals, highlighting the park’s significance as a thriving habitat for these majestic creatures.
