Sri Lanka Latest News
Mr. Chandima Weerakkodi, member of parliament and former minister, said this while participating in the special press conference held at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo.
Mr. Chandima Weerakkodi further commented,
There are about 6 weeks until the term of the Acting President appointed for the remainder of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s presidency officially ends. By July 17, the Election Commission will be empowered to set the date for holding the presidential election. The President and the government are working to launch the maximum possible attack on democracy in the 6 weeks until the term of office of the Acting President officially ends.
The government makes various promises to the people. But those promises will be implemented when the term of the President is over. Also, the government now says that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe solved the country’s economic problem. Also, when the president says that the country’s queue era is over and the country’s condition is good, the Secretary General of the United National Party says that the country’s economic condition is not good, so the tenure of the president and the parliament should be extended by two years. This shows that the president and the government are afraid of the election.
Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, who was sent home by the people, tells a story. Mr Palitha Range Bandara, sent home by the people, tells another story. The purpose of all these talks is to take steps to end democracy in the country.
The Attorney General is a person who has a lot of powers according to the constitution and has a lot of responsibility. No bill passed by the Parliament can become a law without the approval of the Attorney General of the country. If someone challenges the constitutionality of an Act, the Attorney General represents the government. The decision to charge anyone with a crime is made by the Attorney General. The Attorney General of the country has the power to issue a directive to prosecute the police. If a case is filed under the Election Act, the Attorney General has the authority to deal with it.
Mr. Sanjay Rajaratnam, who currently holds the position of Attorney General, is honourable. However, the President has requested the Legislative Assembly to extend the tenure of the Attorney General by 6 months. Mrs Ayesha Jinasena is eligible for the post after the current Attorney General retires in June.
But if the current attorney general is given a service extension, he can work in the office of attorney general until December. The present Chief Justice is scheduled to retire in October. According to tradition, the Attorney General has the ability to be appointed as the Chief Justice based on seniority. The question arises as to whether the government and the president are dressing up casually to influence the country’s judiciary.
The presidential election will be held within the time limit for extending service to the Attorney General.
The person who is going to be a presidential candidate in another 6 weeks is requesting an extension of service to the Attorney General. If there is an election complaint against him, the current Attorney General, who is getting a service extension, will have to take a decision on that.
The President is trying to achieve his political ambitions by attacking all the laws and democracy in the country and throwing the country into chaos. The people of the country should not allow such activities.
Members of Parliament and the President are not people who the people accept. Therefore, a presidential election and a parliamentary election must be held. Accordingly, it is not possible to hold an election. Until a new parliament is elected, the current parliament cannot make decisions for the people.
Also, no matter what the people who rejected the people say, the MPs elected by the people’s vote cannot agree with what they say. Also, the government has the ability to take arbitrary decisions in the parliament for another 3 months. After that, we are ready to implement the right things in the country and lead the country to the right path through a united people power government under the leadership of Mr. Sajith Premadasa.
Also, if something happens that harms the country’s democracy, the United People’s Force will definitely go to the Supreme Court. “
