President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Calls for United National Effort to Eradicate Drug Menace

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that while political and economic matters are open to debate, there is no room for discussion when it comes to fulfilling the national responsibility of eradicating the drug menace from the country. He urged that the entire nation must unite immediately to implement an urgent program to eliminate this pressing issue.

The President made these remarks during a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (23) afternoon, where he briefed heads of media institutions on the “National Mission Together” initiative aimed at eradicating the drug menace.

It was observed during the meeting that numerous crimes are being committed around drug trafficking, which has become a national disaster, endangering the lives of youth and school children. Consequently, it was identified that the eradication of the drug menace requires a comprehensive national-level program driven by strong political leadership, an effective decision-making mechanism, and widespread public participation.

To achieve this objective, the “National Mission for Nation-Together” has been launched. One of its main components is to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse through an extensive media campaign. The vital role that electronic and print media can play in supporting this public awareness effort was discussed at length.

Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake further stated that the drug trade and the financial power of associated criminal gangs are severely undermining the economy, the social fabric, state institutions, and the rule of law — ultimately destroying the nation and society. He affirmed that the current government is determined not to allow this menace to persist and called upon everyone to contribute to the collective effort.

The President also reflected on how such criminal activities, which once thrived under political patronage in the past, have gravely impacted the country and society today. He extended appreciation for the cooperation of key government institutions, including the Police, Customs, the Department of Motor Transport, and the Department of Immigration and Emigration, in addressing this national crisis.

President Dissanayake further emphasized the irreplaceable responsibility entrusted to every citizen to defeat this national disaster for the sake of future generations by ensuring such a situation never arises again.

The National Campaign for the Nation Together is scheduled to be officially launched on October 30 at 10:00 a.m. under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, heads and representatives of public and private media institutions, leaders from the entertainment industry, and several other dignitaries were present at the event.
