Power outages have been reported in several areas of Colombo 9, Colombo 14, and Gampaha, according to the latest reports from Sri Lanka.
Authorities have indicated that it may take some time to restore electricity due to an ongoing strike by electricity trade unions.
The strike, initiated based on eight demands—including the non-issuance of regular appointment letters for employees assigned to new institutions established after the restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB)—began at 3 pm yesterday (March 9). The Ceylon Electricity Trade Unions have stated that the action will continue for 24 hours.
Mr. Kosala Abeysinghe, President of the Ceylon Electricity Board Technicians’ Association, warned that the trade union action would be intensified if their demands are not met.
However, Pubudu Niroshana, Head of the Ceylon Electricity Board Transformation Task Force, emphasized that the planned abolition of the Electricity Board and the transfer of its functions to new companies will not affect the rights and privileges of employees.
