The Department of Meteorology states that the deep low-pressure system located southeast of Sri Lanka has the potential to intensify into a cyclone within the next 12 hours.
Issuing a special advisory at 2:00 PM today (27), the department announced that the system is currently moving northwestward.
At present, the center of the low-pressure system is situated about 120 km southeast of Batticaloa, near latitude 6.7°N and longitude 82.1°E.
According to the advisory, this system is expected to bring continued heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island over the next few days.
Most parts of the country are already experiencing overcast skies, along with intermittent showers or thundershowers.
