All postal workers will report for duty wearing black armbands on World Post Day (October 9), announced Manjula Bandara Jayasundara, General Secretary of the Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Association.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, Jayasundara stated that the recent remarks made by the Postmaster General — claiming that overtime allowances were being fraudulently obtained — have severely tarnished the dignity of postal employees. As a result, postal workers will engage in a symbolic protest by wearing black armbands.
He further noted that legal action will be initiated against the Postmaster General over the statement.
Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara had recently alleged that certain employees had received millions of rupees in overtime payments without providing fingerprint verification.
Following this statement, postal trade unions expressed strong displeasure and condemned the allegations.
