A police sergeant attached to the Gokarella Police Station has been suspended in connection with an assault incident that occurred during an argument on May 24.

According to police sources, the altercation took place between the sergeant and an individual during a roadside inspection. A video clip showing the police officer assaulting the individual has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.

Investigations have revealed that the incident stemmed from an argument involving a man and a woman who were reportedly speeding on a motorcycle along the Ibbagamuwa–Madagalle road, within the Gokarella Police Division. The confrontation occurred when police officers approached the individuals for inspection.
