Police officers are prone to contracting noncommunicable diseases.

Director of Police Medical Services Dr. Shamendra Ranasinghe says that there is a tendency for police officers to contract non-communicable diseases.

He points out that between 20 and 30 percent of police officers have contracted non-communicable diseases.

Dr. Shamendra Ranasinghe expressed these views while participating in a screening program on eye diseases of police officers held at the Colombo National Eye Hospital.

“The percentage of 96,000 police officers in the police medical service is overreported by 5 to 10 percent for non-communicable diseases.” If taken quantitatively among the officials, the percentage of non-communicable diseases among the people is between 15% and 20%. But among these, the percentage of non-communicable diseases among police officers increases by 5% to 10%. Because of this, the Inspector General of Police has given orders for the eye examination in this Vision 2020 pilot project, per the invitation received from the Ministry of Health. We expect the participation of the officers in this program which will be held across the country in the next three months.
