In Jaffna, independent journalist Thambidurai Pradeepan and in Kilinochchi, independent journalist T. Paramasivan said on June 21 that he faced interrogation for about two hours at the Kilinochchi Deputy Inspector General’s office regarding his duties.
On June 2nd, during a meeting with members of a sports club in East Vadamarachchi, Jaffna, a member of the Police Intelligence reported information showing an attempt to attack Tamil National People’s Party (TNPF) leader, Member of Parliament Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam, and another pointing a pistol at him. And these two have been asked who gave the information regarding the incident.
Both of them have told the police that they cannot reveal the source of the information.
T. Paramasivan said that calling by the police clearly shows that the government will continue to interfere with freedom of expression. Paramasivan requests that the questioning of the police regarding his reporting be condemned as an initial step of the repression.
“Looking at this, the media may be suppressed. The problem we have is that the coming laws may make the repression even more serious. And I have to say that this could be the starting point,” says Thambidurai Pradeepan.
