The Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Gampaha division has started a special investigation regarding a group of people including two Gampaha police officers who broke into a house in Divulapitiya yesterday morning (27) in search of a person involved in stealing a piano belonging to famous singer Lahiru Perera.

A senior police officer said that the father and son , who were injured in the attack, are in hospital.

The official also said that a bakery in Gampaha belonging to the singer’s family members is being looked after by a family member. Several musical instruments, including a piano belonging to the singer, were found in the building where the bakery was located. The officer said that the piano had gone missing a few days ago and the investigation by the singer and his brother revealed that the relative had stolen it.

Accordingly, the Gampaha Police has also received a complaint about this. According to the complaint, following a notification from the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Gampaha, several officers went to the house in Salgaduwatte, Divulapitiya, where the suspect is said to be staying, on the morning of the 26th. The police officers have informed the residents to report the suspect to the police.

The senior police officer said that despite such a notification, yesterday morning (27th) at around 1.00 a.m., a group of civilians including two officers in police uniform went to this house and searched for the suspect and attacked father and son who were staying in the house at that time.

Residents have identified one of the officers who attacked and have lodged a complaint with the police stating that he is a sergeant working in the Gampaha Police. Accordingly, the senior officer further mentioned that investigations are being conducted to find the other officer who went with him in this attack.
