He replaces Professor Ranjith Bandara, who held the position of COPE Committee Chairman for the last time.
Professor Ranjith Bandara, Professor Charita Herath, Dr Vijayadasa Rajapaksa and Sunil Hadunnetthi were previously the chairpersons of the COP committee.
