On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, April 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, where he will inaugurate the newly constructed Pamban Bridge and offer prayers at the Ramanathaswamy Temple.

A Milestone in Connectivity

The 2.5-kilometre-long Pamban Bridge is set to revolutionize travel between mainland India and Rameswaram island, reducing train crossing time over the sea from 25-30 minutes on the old colonial-era bridge to under five minutes.

India’s First Vertical Lift Railway Sea Bridge

The new Pamban Bridge, Asia’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, replaces the original structure built in 1914, which was decommissioned in December 2022 due to corrosion. Constructed at a cost of ₹535 crore by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the bridge is designed to support faster train movement and increased rail traffic.

In November last year, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared insights about the project on social media platform X, describing it as a “new era of connectivity.”

“Built in 1914, the old Pamban Rail Bridge connected the mainland to Rameswaram for 105 years. Decommissioned in December 2022 due to corrosion, it paved the way for the modern New Pamban Bridge, marking a new era of connectivity,” Vaishnaw stated.

“The New Pamban Bridge is not just functional—it’s a symbol of progress, connecting people and places with modern engineering,” he added.

Speed Limits and Safety Approvals

Following successful trials, the new bridge has received safety certifications. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has approved a speed limit of 75 kmph for the bridge, except for the vertical lift section, which has been restricted to 50 kmph.

“The new bridge is designed for speeds up to 80 kmph. However, due to a curve, the CRS has set a speed limit of 75 kmph. For the lift span alone, a speed of 50 kmph has been permitted,” said N. Shrinivasan, Senior Deputy General Manager of RVNL, in a statement to news agency PTI in February.

The inauguration of this cutting-edge bridge marks a significant leap in India’s railway infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and efficiency in one of the country’s most historically significant regions.
