The Horn of Africa Institute for Peace and Security (HoAIPS) is inviting policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and peacebuilders to participate in this week’s PeaceTalks, which will feature Prof. Rohan Gunaratna, a globally renowned expert on terrorism and security studies.

The session, titled “Africa: The Emerging Epicentre of Terrorism,” will take place on Friday, 19 September 2025, from 4:00 – 5:30 PM (Somalia Time). The discussion will be moderated by Natascha Hryckow.

Africa has increasingly become the frontline of terrorism, with devastating impacts on local communities, regional stability, and global security. Prof. Gunaratna will share his insights on the drivers of violent extremism, emerging threats, and strategies for achieving sustainable peace across the continent.

In addition to the talk, the session will highlight Prof. Gunaratna’s recent work as co-editor of the book “Handbook of Terrorism in Africa,” written in collaboration with Dr. C. Nna-Emeka Okereke and published by Palgrave Macmillan. The book features contributions from 25 experts across the continent and offers a comprehensive exploration of Africa’s emergence as a global terrorism epicentre. It stands out for its detailed country-specific and regional analyses, which examine the internal and external dynamics fueling terrorism in Africa.
