Parliament Adjourned After Clash Over No-Confidence Motion Against Deputy Defence Minister

The Speaker adjourned parliamentary proceedings for 10 minutes today following a heated situation in the House.

Yesterday (10), the Speaker informed Parliament that the no-confidence motion presented by the Opposition against the Deputy Minister of Defence, Retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, was deemed inadmissible.

In response, Parliamentarian Gayantha Karunathilaka, citing Standing Orders, demanded that the Attorney General’s report and the Secretariat’s findings—both submitted to the Speaker to assist in determining the admissibility of the motion—be tabled before the House.

However, Opposition MPs once again voiced strong protests today against the Speaker’s refusal to accept the no-confidence motion.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Mujibur Rahuman also criticized the ruling, calling the Speaker’s reasoning baseless.

“They have a majority of 159. His position will not be abolished just because we win a no-confidence motion. Only the President has the authority to remove him. Therefore, this is a political issue. You have made a political decision because facts regarding his role in the Easter attack are being revealed. Don’t do this. Don’t do that. It is wrong,” he said.
