Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that although the Rainbow Foreign Employment Agency has collected large sums of money—such as Rs. 850,000 and Rs. 1,850,000—from more than 500 individuals, saying they would be provided jobs in Romania, these jobs have not been provided to them. As a result, the victims have now taken to the streets, having pawned their houses and properties or taken loans, leaving them in severe distress. Sri Lanka Latest News
A group of nearly 500 people who were defrauded by the Maharagama-based Rainbow Foreign Employment Agency—after being promised foreign jobs in Romania in exchange for large amounts of money—visited the Office of the Opposition Leader recently and informed Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa about their situation.
At that meeting, Mr. Premadasa promised to investigate their issue and provide legal assistance. Accordingly, when the case was taken up today, he arrived at the location together with a team of lawyers, as he had pledged.
Expressing his views there, Mr. Premadasa said:
Workers, military veterans, and various professionals—who hoped to support their families by going abroad for employment due to the country’s economic difficulties—have now fallen victim to a massive financial scam. Although certain security agencies have shown interest in investigating the matter, the Foreign Employment Bureau has not properly investigated the issue. He added that the legal steps taken by the Bureau’s legal division regarding this allegedly “registered” agency are far from satisfactory.
He further stated that the matter will be raised in Parliament as well as in relevant advisory committees, and that all possible measures will be taken to recover the money or secure the promised jobs. He assured that maximum support will be provided within the legal framework, including legal assistance for the victims.
Mr. Premadasa emphasized that he has great respect and confidence in the judicial system of the country, and therefore the victims must receive justice and fairness.
He also added that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is focused not on dramatic displays or empty slogans, but on providing answers and solutions to the people’s problems—and that the party will continue to fight to deliver those solutions.
