The Federation of Free Trade Zone Investors states that half of the small and medium-scale garment factories in Sri Lanka have already been closed. Sri Lanka Latest News
Its General Secretary Mr. Dhammika Fernando points out that this situation has arisen due to the decrease in the amount of garment orders received in Sri Lanka and the increase in production costs.
He said that currently, the income of the garment industry has decreased by 25 per cent and because of that, investors are working to invest in other countries.
He says that already about ten large-scale companies have given compensation and laid off the workers and some companies have given full or partial wages to the workers from their deposits and kept them at home even though the production is not done in the factories.
He further said that it will be decided to close twenty per cent of the large-scale factories for a period of three months after December.
