A group of Opposition Members of Parliament has submitted a letter to the Speaker requesting an emergency adjournment debate to draw Parliament’s attention to the clashes that erupted inside the Negombo Prison.
The letter has been signed by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and MPs Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Kabir Hashim, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Kings Nelson, Rohini Wijerathna and Hector Appuhamy.
The letter states that 26 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in the clashes that took place at the Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6. It further alleges that the government bears full responsibility for the deaths and injuries resulting from the incident.
Citing the gravity and urgency of the situation, the Opposition MPs have urged the Speaker to allocate time for an emergency adjournment debate in Parliament.
Meanwhile, although security forces have now brought the unrest at Negombo Prison largely under control, female inmates continue to stage protests inside the prison.
