A group of opposition MPs from Sri Lanka has traveled to Myanmar to rescue Sri Lankan youths held by computer criminals. They are set to begin talks with Myanmar’s Deputy Foreign Minister and the Chief Sanghanayaka Thero.

On May 29, 2024, Sri Lankan opposition MPs, including lawyer Vasanna Yapabandara and MP Sujith Sanjay Perera, started discussions at 11:30 am at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw, approximately 500 kilometres from Yangon. Their mission is to rescue 49 Sri Lankan youths being forcibly detained by computer criminals in Myanmar’s Myawadi area.

Representing the Prime Minister of Myanmar, Deputy Foreign Minister H.E.U. Than Swe and a group of diplomatic officers participated in the talks. During the meeting, Sri Lankan opposition leader Sajith Premadasa handed over a memorandum requesting diplomatic efforts to rescue the youths.

Following the meeting, discussions continued with Thanlyin Min Kyaung Sayardaw, the Chief Sanghanayaka of Myanmar, at the Shwe Dagon Pagoda Temple in Yangon. Later, at 7:30 pm, a memorandum signed by Sri Lanka’s Tri-denominational Mahanayaka Swamipada, containing a special request to save the youths, was also presented to the Chief Sanghanayaka.
