A meeting of opposition political party leaders was held today (25) at the Office of the Opposition Leader, under the patronage of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, to discuss the political situation arising from the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized that Wickremesinghe’s arrest is not an isolated incident but a serious challenge to democratic politics in Sri Lanka. He underscored the need for all opposition parties to work collectively to address this challenge. Premadasa further stated that the meeting was convened with the objective of formulating both short-term and long-term programs in collaboration with all opposition parties.
Former President Maithripala Sirisena, addressing the gathering, highlighted the need to find answers to two key questions: the program to secure the release of Mr. Wickremesinghe, and the broader strategy to safeguard democratic politics in the country. He stressed that overcoming these challenges requires all political parties to set aside their differences and unite.
Representatives of the various political parties present also affirmed the importance of unified action among the opposition in the current political climate.
During the discussions, Premadasa announced the formation of an action committee comprising party secretaries to coordinate future initiatives. He also reiterated the significance of continuing joint efforts against what he described as the government’s anti-democratic agenda.
The party leaders agreed to reconvene on August 27 at the Opposition Leader’s Office to further deliberate on the way forward.
