Opposition Leader Sajith Unveils Comprehensive Plan to Address Easter Attack: Commission, Investigation, and Legal Reforms Proposed – VIDEO I Sri Lanka Latest News

In light of the unanswered inquiries about the Easter attack and the perceived lack of government action, Opposition Leader Sajith, addressing Parliament today, outlined his proposed approach if elected President in the upcoming election. Mr. Premadasa stated that upon assuming office, he would establish a commission comprising 7 to 9 members, both local and foreign, under the Commission of Inquiry Act No. 17 of 1948, with a two-month mandate. This commission would comprehensively review past and present security protocols, empowered to obtain necessary information without hindrance.

Furthermore, within six weeks of the commission’s formation, a permanent investigative office, including foreign intelligence agencies like Scotland Yard and the FBI, alongside local counterparts, would be set up. This office would operate under the directives of the commission and adhere to Sri Lankan laws, with the Attorney General mandated to pursue indictments based on its recommendations.

To facilitate these actions, amendments to Sections 7(2) and 24 of the Commission of Inquiry Act No. 17 of 1948 would be proposed, along with the establishment of a permanent High Court for adjudicating cases related to the Easter attack. Additionally, plans are underway to amend Article 12 and draft legislation for an independent public prosecutor’s office, separate from the Attorney General’s jurisdiction.
