Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa Urges Respect for Supreme Court Rulings, Emphasizes Separation of Powers in Parliament – Sri Lanka Latest News

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa addressed Parliament today (25), asserting that the executive, legislature, and judiciary—all key components of the country’s supreme law—must act justly and within the bounds of the law. He emphasized that the law cannot be manipulated at will.

Premadasa stated that rulings by the court or the Supreme Court must be implemented and cannot be questioned, underscoring the need to respect the authority of the judiciary. He highlighted that adherence to these rulings is fundamental to maintaining the democratic system and that the Constitution’s provisions regarding the separation of powers must not be manipulated.

He also noted that there have been various discussions about the recent Supreme Court decision, including deliberations by the Council of Ministers. Despite this, the Supreme Court has signalled that both the legislature and the executive must implement the decision without breaching the Constitution or undermining democracy.

Premadasa stressed that the Supreme Court’s decisions must be followed strictly and that neither the President nor the Cabinet has the authority to disregard these rulings. The government is required to enforce the interim order issued by the Supreme Court without deviation or misinterpretation.
