The Opposition Leader emphasized that enhancing human development in a country can be achieved by strengthening schools in both rural and urban areas and providing high-quality, international-level education. This approach will help cultivate responsible citizens.
He highlighted the significant role of citizens in economic growth, noting that domestic workers make substantial sacrifices by sending foreign remittances. To address this, Mr Sajith Premadasa proposed establishing nine international-level training centres across the nine provinces through public-private partnerships. These centres aim to train educated young women as nurses, contributing to the healthcare sector.
Mr Premadasa made these comments during a donation event at St. John and the Baptist Maha Vidyalaya in Jaela Kandana Nagoda, Gampaha. The donation included 1,177,000 rupees worth of classroom equipment and dictionaries under the 361st phase of the Sakwala Suhuru Classrooms program. Additionally, 100,000 rupees were donated to the School Development Account.
He also mentioned plans to create youth development centres at the divisional secretariat level to foster intellectual growth and establish international nursing hospitals in every province. He urged adopting successful models, such as those in the Philippines, to improve job opportunities based on skills and merits.
Under Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s “Breath” program, medicines and hospital equipment worth 19.06 million rupees have been distributed to 63 hospitals. Additionally, 89 buses worth 5 million rupees have been provided to schools under the Sakwala Bus Program. The Sakwala Information Technology Program has equipped 361 schools with comfortable classroom materials, with an expenditure of 40.16 million rupees.
