In today’s parliamentary session, Hon. Sajith Premadasa, the Opposition Leader of Sri Lanka, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his historic achievement of securing three consecutive victories in the Indian parliamentary elections. Premadasa highlighted that Modi is the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to accomplish such a feat, attributing this success to Modi’s visionary leadership, practical policies, and effective governance.

Premadasa also took this opportunity to advocate for India’s elevation to a permanent member status in the United Nations Security Council. He emphasized that India, with its status as the world’s most populous country and a significant global economic and military power, deserves this recognition. Premadasa urged all 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament to support this proposal, expressing confidence that the current permanent members of the Security Council would acknowledge India’s rightful place in the global power structure.

Reflecting on Modi’s journey, Premadasa praised his rise from humble beginnings to becoming a transformative leader. Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and his subsequent terms as Prime Minister have showcased his energy, determination, and ability to lead India through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Premadasa commended Modi for turning adverse situations into opportunities for growth and progress, making India a beacon of resilience in the region.

Premadasa further acknowledged the strong bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and India, noting India’s significant financial support during Sri Lanka’s economic struggles. He expressed gratitude for India’s assistance, including grants, loans, and other financial aid totaling approximately 6 billion USD.

In closing, Premadasa reiterated his congratulations to Prime Minister Modi, the BJP, and the NDA Alliance, expressing his desire for continued cooperation between the two nations to ensure mutual prosperity and benefits.
