The opposition leader has addressed the pressing need for nationwide debates on various issues affecting the country, acknowledging that such discussions are integral to a robust democratic society. Sajith Premadasa expressed his willingness to engage in debates across a spectrum of topics encompassing economics, social issues, politics, international affairs, and more.
During the 140th phase of the Sakwala Suhuru classrooms program in Mulathivu Oddusudan Mutthuiankattu Left Bank R.D.M, Sajith Premadasa reiterated his commitment to serving the nation by fostering development and facilitating debates. He underscored the urgency of addressing poverty, citing World Bank data indicating a stark increase in poverty levels in Sri Lanka, with nearly half the population affected. Premadasa emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive poverty eradication program that goes beyond temporary measures, advocating for initiatives focused on production, investment, consumption, and savings.
Furthermore, the opposition leader criticized the government’s selective provision of lunch solely to primary school children, advocating instead for universal coverage to ensure no child goes hungry. Under Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s initiatives, significant contributions have been made to the healthcare and education sectors, including the provision of medicines and hospital equipment to numerous hospitals, buses to schools, and modern classroom equipment to enhance learning environments.
