The Opposition Leader stated that at a time when incidents of animal cruelty are increasing in the country, greater attention should be given not only to preventing cruelty but also to safeguarding the rights of animals, as well as the rights of individuals who promote compassion and kindness toward animal resources.

Although discussions have taken place for a long period regarding the introduction of laws to prevent animal cruelty and ensure animal welfare, these promises have yet to be fulfilled. In this context, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that legislation to protect animal rights would be introduced in Parliament, and that the animal welfare programme would be established as law in Sri Lanka.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made these remarks while addressing the Dog Festival 2026.

He further stated that he would extend his full support toward the formulation of a strong legal framework aimed at preventing conflicts between humans and animals, while ensuring the protection of the rights of both humans and animals.
