The Opposition Leader expressed grave concern over the recent murder on the court premises, stating that it poses not only a threat to the judiciary but also to the entire society. He emphasized that this is a crucial issue that requires immediate attention. While some security measures have been provided to judges—who carry out the most vital work in the judiciary—there have been written notifications in the past indicating that their security would be withdrawn.
The Opposition Leader highlighted the rising insecurity, noting that civilians and even journalists are facing threats. Journalists reporting on these matters, in particular, are vulnerable. He pointed out that despite a court order mandating security for journalist Chamuditha, it was subsequently withdrawn.
He urged the government to prioritize the security of both the general public and those in the media sector. He also called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for appropriate actions to be taken. The Opposition Leader emphasized the need for the government to ensure the safety of public representatives as well.
Speaking in Parliament, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa warned that if the entire judicial system collapses due to such violent acts, the very fabric of society will be at risk. He called on the government, which had previously pledged to address national security issues and promised to rid the country of drug dealers, to take concrete steps to implement these commitments and safeguard the security of judges.
