According to the Mobile Phone Importers and Sellers Association, mobile phone prices will increase by 18% from next month. (Sri Lanka Latest News)

Samith Senarath, president of the association, said that the reason for this is that mobile phones are also subject to VAT.

In the meantime, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has held several discussions with the importers and sellers of mobile phones as well as mediators and representatives of the main international telephone companies in Sri Lanka.

It was stated that 3.1 billion tax revenue is already being lost due to the illegal importation of mobile phones and with the imposition of new taxes, that amount will increase to 11.9 billion rupees.

It has also been discussed here that mobile phones are coming to the market without the registration of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission and the importers and sellers of mobile phones have warned the government that consumers will turn to the fake market to buy phones at low prices.
