According to the results released so far for the local government elections, the National People’s Force (NPP) is leading in the majority of seats. However, political analysts warn that the party may face significant challenges when it comes to forming local councils.
Out of the 268 local government institutions for which results have been announced, the NPP has secured a clear majority of seats in only 103 institutions.
In a further 20 local government bodies, the NPP and opposition parties are currently tied in terms of representation.
The remaining local government institutions have been won by opposition political parties, who hold the majority of seats.
This fragmented outcome is likely to create complications in the council formation process.
According to election procedures, if a single party or an independent group secures 50% or more of the elected seats in a local government institution, the Election Commission will request that the party or group nominate a chairman and vice-chairman.
However, in cases where no party or group achieves such a majority, the chairman or mayor must be appointed with the consensus of the elected members of the respective local government body—without any intervention from the Election Commission.
