The Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure area in the south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a depression over South-East Bay of Bengal by today (6) and move west-northwestwards near the northern coast of Sri Lanka.

It will intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and reach the Southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu coasts by 08th December.

Under the influence of this system, rainy and windy conditions are expected to enhance over the Northern, North-Central and Eastern Provinces on 07 and 08 of December.

Several spells of showers are likely in the Eastern province.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa Province and Hambanthota district during the afternoon or night.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa and Southwest Bay of Bengal from noon today (6) until further notice.

The fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Condition of Rain:

Showers or thundershowers will occur in several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaitivu to Galle via Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Pottuvil and Hambanthota.

Winds:

Winds will be northerly or north-easterly and the speed will be (25-35) kmph.

Wind speed may increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa.

State of Sea:

The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa will be rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be moderate.
