No Reduction in Three-Wheeler Fares Despite Fuel Price Drop – Association
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Western Province Three-Wheeler Drivers and Owners Association has stated that despite the recent reduction in fuel prices, there will be no adjustments to three-wheeler fares.

Speaking at a media briefing today (01), the association’s chairman, Lalith Dharmasekara, emphasized that instead of fare reductions, the government should focus on implementing formal regulations to enhance the efficiency and reliability of three-wheeler services.

“Petrol prices have been reduced by Rs. 10 per liter. On average, a three-wheeler runs about 20 kilometers per liter, meaning the potential cost reduction is just 50 cents per kilometer. This is neither practical nor significant,” Dharmasekara explained.

He further highlighted the issue of unregulated pricing, stating, “Even now, three-wheeler fares across Sri Lanka are inconsistent, with many charging arbitrary rates. The real solution is not reducing fares by 50 cents or Rs. 10, but rather ensuring a well-regulated and effective service for the public. Our primary objective is to create a more reliable three-wheeler transport system, not to cut fares based on minimal fuel price reductions.”
