For the presidential election, the Election Commission is working to establish election operation rooms in every police station and divisional police jurisdiction in the island. Sri Lanka Latest News
The functioning of the Election Operation Committees thus established will be supervised by the Divisional Police Officers and the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the area.
These Election Commissions receive complaints regarding election violence and violations of election laws.
Meanwhile, it is said that a separate police unit related to the election has already been established at the police headquarters. There is a police station in charge of the unit, and a senior superintendent of police supervises the unit.
In addition to the Senior DIG Asanga Karavita, another DIG and a Senior Superintendent of Police have been appointed to cover the duties related to the presidential election.
Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr Asanga Karavita is coordinating the activities related to the election with the Election Commission.
A Senior Superintendent of Police has been appointed for district coordination.
Although there is no Inspector General of Police, the Constitution gives the Election Commission the power to issue orders to the police once an election is declared.
