Neglected Maradana Flyover Raises Safety Fears After Roof Damage from Heavy Rains
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Maradana Flyover, a critical pedestrian pathway used daily by thousands to safely cross one of Colombo’s main roads, is now raising serious safety concerns.

Built in 1978 under the direction of the late Mr. Ranasinghe Premadasa, the Maradana Flyover is recognized as one of the oldest flyovers in the capital. However, time and neglect have taken a visible toll on the structure, with signs of poor maintenance evident to any observer.

Despite its importance and the growing signs of deterioration, the flyover appears to have received little attention from the responsible authorities over the years.

The issue reached a critical point yesterday when heavy rains and strong winds caused the roof of the flyover to come loose. This incident created significant difficulties for pedestrians using the bridge, as well as for vendors operating nearby.

Residents and daily commuters are now calling for urgent action. It is the clear responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure the bridge is repaired without delay—before a potential collapse endangers lives.
