The WhatsApp hotline 071-8598888, introduced for the public to report police misconduct and criminal activities following the appointment of IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, has received nearly 3,000 submissions as of yesterday (17).

The number was officially launched on the 13th to enable citizens to directly share information with the IGP. Within just five days, the platform has received an overwhelming response from the public.

Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Udaya Kumara Wutler, stated that the submissions include both complaints related to the police and various other matters. He further noted that the volume of information received has exceeded the system’s handling capacity. Accordingly, steps have already been taken to investigate the reported facts.

Authorities have clarified that the WhatsApp number is designated solely for submitting information and photographs, and it is not available for phone calls.
