On the evening of July 4, 2022, the Sri Lanka Navy carried out a special operation to drive Indian trawlers out of the northern waters of the island.

As a result, the operation resulted in the capture of an Indian trawler with five Indian fishermen who were engaged in illegal fishing off the coast of Analaitivu Island in Sri Lanka.

After noticing Indian trawlers engaging in poaching off the Analaitivu Island, the Navy sent out Fast Attack Craft from the 4th Fast Attack Flotilla (4 FAF), attached to the Northern Naval Command, to drive them out of Sri Lankan waters (IMBL).

The Navy arrested five Indian fishermen and their fishing equipment on an Indian trawler during this operation for poaching in the island’s waters.

A second Indian trawler carrying 12 fishermen was apprehended by the Navy on July 3 during a related operation off the coast of Point Pedro.

As a result, 17 Indian fishermen as well as Indian poaching vessels have both been presented for further legal action. The Navy is adamant about conducting routine operations to safeguard the nation’s fisheries resources and the local fishing community’s way of life.
