Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has stated that he is fully prepared to vacate the official residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa whenever the government requests.
In a media interaction, the MP explained that the residence in question is constitutionally allocated to former presidents, and he is willing to hand it over to the government upon receiving a written notification.
“The house was provided to former presidents by the constitution, and it involves security matters. However, if the current president intends to sell the property or remove former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from there, he can issue a written request. It is not a house we demanded, but one that a former president is entitled to under the constitution,” Rajapaksa said.
When asked how they would respond if asked to vacate the residence suddenly, he emphasized, “We will leave at any time. These are not our personal homes, but government properties. If the president wants to sell it to someone, we will leave; it’s not an issue.”
Regarding former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s stance on the matter, Namal Rajapaksa commented, “He shares that view.”
When further asked if this means Mahinda Rajapaksa is ready to leave at any time, the MP responded, “Oh, he is Mahinda Rajapaksa. Many people have forgotten that.”
