A series of tragic road accidents reported from various parts of the country have resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, including women and children.
In the Habaraketiya area on the Hunnasgiriya–Meemure road, a van veered off the road and plunged into a ravine, raising the death toll to four. According to police, three of the victims are women, including two 29-year-olds. The identity of the third female victim is yet to be confirmed. A man and a child who were injured in the incident are currently receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Hospital.
In a separate accident that occurred yesterday (19) afternoon on the Narammala–Giriulla road within the Narammala Police Division, a car reportedly lost control, veered to the right side of the road, and collided head-on with a bus traveling in the opposite direction. The crash claimed the lives of the car driver and two infant girls, aged 9 months and 11 months. The deceased driver has been identified as a 38-year-old resident of Divullawa in the Mahawa area. The driver, conductor, and a passenger of the bus sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Dambadeniya Hospital. Investigations are ongoing under the purview of the Narammala Police.
Meanwhile, in the Wellawa Police Division, a fatal pedestrian accident was reported on the Wariyapola–Kumbukgete road in the Kapuhena area. A lorry traveling towards Kumbukgete collided with a pedestrian, resulting in the death of a 48-year-old woman from the Ganewatta area.
Another fatal collision occurred near the 85th kilometer post on the Colombo–Kandy road in the Kegalle Police Division. A lorry traveling towards Kandy attempted to overtake a motorcycle moving in the same direction and collided with it. The motorcyclist, a 50-year-old resident of Assapitiya, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead after being admitted to the Kegalle Hospital.
In a separate incident reported from the Thirappanaya area yesterday (19) morning, 10 people were injured in a van accident. Police stated that the van, which was en route from Kekirawa to Anuradhapura, lost control due to excessive speed and veered off the road. At the time of the accident, 13 people, including the driver, were on board. All 10 injured passengers have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
