MPs Prioritized in Compensation: Rs. 73.5M Allocated for Burnt Houses Amid Rs. 13.35B Payout in 2023

An audit of the Compensation Office has revealed that Members of Parliament (MPs) whose homes were destroyed during the recent unrest have received a total of Rs. 73.5 million in compensation.

According to the audit, the Compensation Office disbursed a total of Rs. 13,350 million in 2023. Notably, more than half of this amount was allocated to MPs for damages to their properties, amounting to Rs. 73.5 million.

In contrast, the compensation distributed to all other individuals who submitted claims amounted to just Rs. 58.2 million.

Despite a significant number of compensation requests from the general public preceding those of the MPs, priority appears to have been given to lawmakers and ministers. This decision has raised questions about the fairness of the compensation process and the allocation of funds by the Compensation Office.
