MP Sujeewa Senasinghe participated in a media conference held today (07) at the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) head office.
Speaking at the event, he stated:
“Before I entered politics, I was injured in a police shooting incident in 2001. Following the incident, I filed a case against the police in the Supreme Court, which resulted in a landmark verdict. As per the ruling, I was awarded nearly 400,000 rupees in compensation. Furthermore, the government has been using this judgment, particularly the section regarding the use of minimal force by the police, in legal proceedings against Serasinghe. Consequently, this case has become a significant legal precedent in the country.
After entering politics in 2004, I took a firm stand against corruption and fraud while advocating for people’s rights. As a lawyer, I have also represented the public in various legal cases without charging any fees.
However, when I raised my voice against corruption and criticized dishonest politicians, several individuals and institutions attempted to tarnish my reputation through direct attacks and baseless allegations. I want to make it clear that if any individual or institution tries to defame me, I will fight back without hesitation.
In 2017, a private media channel aired a false report linking me to the so-called ‘Central Bank Bond Put Note Gang.’ As a result, Minister C. B. Ratnayake filed a defamation case against me, seeking compensation. In response, I also filed lawsuits against a media organization that had deliberately engaged in a malicious campaign to damage my reputation. This institution not only published false statements against me but also made a concerted effort to promote a politician affiliated with it at my expense. This is why I decided to pursue legal action in the first place.
Minister C. B. Ratnayake later admitted that he had made a mistake. I repeatedly requested him to correct his false statement, but he showed no willingness to do so. Consequently, the case was heard in court, and a ruling was issued, ordering Mr. Ratnayake to pay 250 million rupees in compensation. Despite these legal proceedings, various parties continue to spread misinformation and hurl baseless accusations against me, particularly regarding the bond issue.
