Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who was issued an arrest warrant, returned to the country today (29).
Rajapaksa had left the island yesterday (28) on a personal visit. Reports indicate that he departed yesterday morning on the same flight taken by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake en route to the Maldives.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that MP Rajapaksa is expected to appear before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court today through a motion.
Hambantota Chief Magistrate Oshadha Mahaarachchi issued an arrest warrant for Rajapaksa yesterday, after he failed to appear in court regarding a case filed over alleged disorderly conduct during a protest against the sale of the Hambantota Port in 2017.
Previously, eight individuals, including Namal Rajapaksa, were arrested in connection with the incident and remanded before later being released on bail.
However, when the case was taken up again yesterday, the Chief Magistrate ordered that MP Rajapaksa be arrested and produced before the court due to his absence.
