MP Hector Appuhami Criticizes Government Policies and Champions Sajith Premadasa’s Leadership at Colombo Press Conference I Sri Lanka Latest News

During a press conference held at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo on the 20th, Member of Parliament Hector Appuhami addressed several pressing issues regarding the current state of Sri Lanka and the promises of the Samagi Janabalawegaya party led by Sajith Premadasa.

Appuhami emphasized that the country’s development is unattainable without systemic change. He warned that altering the current system without a clear plan could lead to another era of economic queues. However, he assured that under a Samagi Janabalawegaya government led by Sajith Premadasa, there would be no return to such conditions or bankruptcy. He asserted his readiness to take responsibility for the nation’s future.

Criticizing President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Appuhami pointed out that despite claims of averting bankruptcy due to successful IMF debt restructuring, no global acknowledgement of Sri Lanka’s economic recovery exists. He highlighted issues like Japanese banks refusing to accept letters of credit from Sri Lanka and the government’s failure to implement effective tax collection programs.

Appuhami called for immediate action to collect tax arrears and implement a comprehensive plan to address frauds like the sugar tax and waste fertilizer scandals. He stressed the need for programs to attract foreign investment and boost exports, rather than relying on temporary measures that deceive the public.

Regarding foreign employment, Appuhami noted that the remittance increase was not due to government efforts but rather the private sector’s success in finding job opportunities abroad. He criticized the government for not providing adequate training or support for those seeking employment overseas.

Appuhami also condemned the government’s misuse of funds, suggesting that money meant for public projects was being diverted for electioneering purposes. He insisted that the Samagi Janabalawegaya and Sajith Premadasa are committed to genuine economic reform and international cooperation to create sustainable business opportunities and jobs in Sri Lanka.

Highlighting Sajith Premadasa’s practical leadership, Appuhami praised initiatives like the ‘Sakwala’ program, which connects children with the world, and criticized other leaders for ineffective foreign trips and mismanagement of resources.

Finally, Appuhami called for the immediate registration of drug importers by the National Drug Regulatory Authority to prevent a potential shortage of medicines, emphasizing the need for quality and variety in the healthcare sector. He urged the authorities to act responsibly to avoid harming the public.
