A 26-year-old mother and her 2 ½-month-old infant have been remanded in custody over the alleged theft of two chocolates.
The arrest was carried out by officers of the Gandara Police Station yesterday (30). The mother and child were subsequently produced before the Matara Chief Magistrate’s Court, where they were ordered to be remanded.
Attorney Sameera Meekandawatte, appearing on behalf of the woman and her infant, opposed the decision to deny bail. He argued that remanding the mother would result in severe injustice to the child, despite the presence of bailiffs in court.
