Minister Vijitha Herath has proposed to the Chinese government that electric vehicle (EV) charging stations be installed across Sri Lanka as a donation from China.

The proposal was made in view of Sri Lanka’s plans to import electric vehicles in large quantities from the global automobile market, including China.

Minister Herath presented this proposal during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese Ambassador responded positively to the proposal and agreed to convey the matter to the Chinese government.

During the discussion, the Minister emphasized that the initiative would be particularly important as the Sri Lankan government is also planning to import a greater number of electric buses in the future.

Minister Herath further informed the Ambassador that Sri Lanka expects the Chinese government to provide immediate assistance for the reconstruction of railway lines and bridges that were damaged due to recent disasters.

In response, Ambassador Qi Zhenhong agreed to promptly bring this request to the attention of the Chinese government.

Additionally, the Ambassador stated that he hopes to assess the damage caused in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditta and discuss with the Chinese government the various forms of assistance that could be provided.
