A video has been released showing the Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure, Jeevan Thonman, who came with a mob, stormed into the head office of the Nuwara Eliya Pedro Estate belonging to the Kalaniveli Estate Company, threatened the officials of the estate management authority and behaved in a shameful manner. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
It is reported that even now, the estate workers led by the minister have kept the control authority including estate superintendent Anura Weerakon under office arrest, and due to the minister’s intervention, there has been a background where the police cannot enforce the law.
The reason for this labour incitement is that the two workers were temporarily suspended because they refused the notice given to the plantation workers to remove a quantity of tea trees to plant some coffee plants based on a decision taken by the Plantation Management Authority.
In connection with this, in the investigation held today at the Nuwara Eliya Labor Office, the estate management authority has not agreed to reinstate these workers. The situation has escalated with the Minister of Estate Infrastructure behaving like a thug, giving political power to the unrest that arose due to that situation.
