Participating in a program held in Colombo, Minister Sunil Handunnetti emphasized the challenges the government faces in addressing entrenched corruption within the public sector. He pointed out that despite efforts to introduce reform, some public officials continue to adhere to outdated and corrupt practices.

The Minister reflected on his journey, stating, “Before joining the government, my battles were on the streets. Now, I find myself contending with certain public officials.” He noted that resistance within the public service is obstructing the government’s ability to provide relief, protect citizens’ rights, and deliver on its mandate.

Minister Handunnetti further remarked that officials clinging to the old system have failed to grasp the vision and priorities of the new administration. “Today, we even find ourselves fighting with the Ministry of Finance to safeguard local industries and to address tax policy issues,” he added.
