Minister of Justice Explores Proposal to Relocate Prisoners to Island Facility! Sri Lanka Latest News

The Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reform said that the main problem faced by the prison department is the reduction of the capacity to hold prison inmates, and since the island of Mantiv, located in the Eastern Province, has an area of about one hundred acres, there is the possibility of establishing a new prison or a rehabilitation centre there. The minister made these comments recently (23) on an observation trip to Mantiw Island, located on the coast near the city of Batticaloa in the Eastern Province.

Speaking to the media, it was mentioned that during the last COVID season, the Sri Lankan Air Force had taken over and provided facilities to quarantine the Air Force officers who contracted COVID. Stating that the prison department is currently overcrowded due to the increase in the number of prisoners, the two leprosy patients who are currently being detained at the Ema Land are in discussion with the Ministry of Health and there is a possibility of transferring them to a place where infectious patients are located.
