Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, has firmly stated that the Sevanagala factory of Lanka Sugar Company will not be allowed to shut down under any circumstances.
He made this assurance while addressing a press conference convened to discuss the current state of Sri Lanka’s sugar industry.
Sugarcane is cultivated across more than 25,000 acres surrounding the Sevanagala Sugar Factory. Recently, farmers in the area raised concerns that the factory is at risk of closure due to ongoing mismanagement.
According to the farmers, the factory has not been collecting sugarcane for production purposes, resulting in harvested sugarcane being stockpiled in various locations. During this period, vehicles transporting sugarcane were also seen parked along both sides of the road.
In response to these developments, Minister Sunil Handunnetti held a special media briefing where he categorically stated that there is no threat of the Sevanagala Sugar Factory being shut down.
