The opposition leader said that the current government, the Minister of Health, the Secretary of Health and the Ministry of Health are engaged in a conspiracy to deliberately destroy the health sector in this country and that the government is trying to completely remove the Medicines Regulatory Authority Act and the Medical Council Act.

The opposition leader also said that although he believes that there should be amendments in these laws from time to time, removing these laws completely means giving space to a drug mafia and allowing international organizations led by various multinational drug companies to manipulate the country’s drug policy.

At this moment, the health sector has become a disaster and doctors are leaving the country, there is brain drain and there is also a shortage of medicines. It is the government’s responsibility to provide high quality medicines at reasonable prices, but the current government is doing this by using decrees and discarding procurement methods. The leader of the opposition said here that they are creating crony capitalism in the pharmaceutical industry at the whim of the minister, the secretary and the rulers, allowing their friends to import and release drugs in this country and operating the inferior drug mafia.

Opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this today (21) during a discussion held by the opposition party executive council with various associations in the medical field.

The opposition leader noted that the drug mafia operating in the country should be stopped and these corrupt systems should be defeated and that this is a robbery of the public property of the country and the people’s money.

The opposition leader urged that this country needs a transparent and efficient national policy without political differences and political influences in its implementation and for that he will implement the maximum possible struggle through the parliament.

The opposition leader said that even if Samagi Jana Balavega supports any good thing that is positive for the country, it is not done by craving for positions and opposition is not ready to join hands with a government that leads people to the deathbed.

The opposition leader said that the Aswasuma program failed because it was implemented without proper survey and that the government is engaged in a program to destroy the health sector by applying the same method to the health sector. He also said that the 225 members of the parliament will have to decide whether to stand for these policies.

At this time, the National Medicines Regulatory Authority Act and the Sri Lanka Medical Council Act were discussed. A group representing Sri Lanka Association of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Sri Lanka Medical Association joined this event.
